In July 2024, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a
Final Rule regulating the use of methylene chloride CAS # 75-09-2 (dichloromethane, DCM) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
The new Final Rule essentially bans methylene chloride for use by the public and severely restricts its use in laboratories.
There are exemptions to allow for laboratory use, but only in certain conditions and with specific safety measures and procedures implemented.
Any laboratory that wishes to continue to use methylene chloride after May 2025 (when the regulation goes into effect) would be required to complete among other items:
- Initial and periodic air monitoring
- Establish regulated areas
- Provide additional personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Additional training for workers
- Written exposure control plan
- Recordkeeping requirements
